L.A. County Fire Search Dogs Inc. was established on January 12, 2016, by dedicated members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) canine team. Founded as a California domestic nonprofit corporation, our explicit mission has always been to enhance the capabilities of the department's elite canine teams.
From day one, the organization was structured to provide vital support where municipal funds leave off—securing advanced training opportunities, procuring specialized field equipment, and addressing the critical veterinary and nutritional needs of search dogs that fall outside the Fire Department’s budget constraints.

In 2020, under the strategic guidance of the fire department administration, our organization paused its independent financial operations to consolidate county-wide philanthropic efforts. During this window, the Canine Search Team was supported under the umbrella of the newly established Los Angeles County Fire Foundation. This temporary structural alignment allowed the canine teams to successfully receive community support and foster foundational relationships with major corporate donors like MARS Inc.

In 2024, navigating operational changes and structural uncertainty within the Fire Foundation, the current canine handlers made the decisive choice to reinstate L.A. County Fire Search Dogs Inc. as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. This critical pivot restored absolute operational autonomy to the team, ensuring that handlers have the direct, unhindered authority to determine exactly what our working dogs need and want. Since reclaiming our independent status, we have proudly carried forward our legacy relationships, expanded our donor network, and ensured that 100% of every dollar contributed goes directly to the safety, readiness, and care of our canine heroes.
